Very good resource for families
I agree with the previous reviews. This is an excellent resource, and a great model for how to introduce European cultures (or any other cultures) to your children. Brings the wonder and excitement that we feel as parents to the children, and makes the travel much more satisfying for everyone. Other great ideas are included in the "Storybook Travels" book, although not exclusive to Europe, but does give a good perspective on how to adapt travel to the needs of your kids.
Italy without tears
We just got back from a two-week vacation to Italy with our children, ages 8 and 10. The Italy Discovery Journal was a lifesaver and kept our children engaged and amused. In the past we tried to expose them to all the wonderful cultural aspects that my wife and I find so enjoyable when travelling abroad: the paintings, statues, monuments, the history and were disappointed to see our kids eyes glaze over with boredom. Our trip to Italy was made so much more enjoyable for the entire family since our children got to experience the culture from a kid's perspective. As parents, it helped us put into practice numerous useful suggestions to stop the tears and whining and helped our entire family understand and observe simple, everyday ways in which Italians live their lives. We're now planning a trip to the U.K. next year so am hoping that there will be "London Discovery Journal" by that time.
Inter-cultural education while having fun
This book is written by an insider who obviously has never lost to see the world through the eyes of a curious child. As I learned about various aspects of the Italian people's life, I also learned to appreciate my own customs in a way I had never done before. Although I am not between 6 and 16 (I celebrated my 16th birthday a long, long time ago), I greatly enjoyed the book.
